About the Zoom F4:

Rent the Zoom F4 in Los Angeles from F22 Studios. The F4 is a professional multitrack field recorder designed for narrative production sound, documentary and interview work, commercial and corporate shoots, and any production that needs proper multichannel recording with reliable timecode at a working rate.

The F4 records up to eight tracks: six inputs — four of them locking XLR/TRS combo jacks with Zoom high-quality preamps and 48V phantom power — plus a stereo mix. That is enough for a boom and several wireless lavs on a typical interview or narrative day, with ISO tracks written separately so the editor can rebalance in post rather than living with an on-set mix.

Timecode is the reason the F4 sits in so many sound bags. Its internal generator holds 0.2ppm accuracy, and timecode in and out let it jam-sync with cameras and slates and hold that sync through a long shooting day. On multi-camera shoots that is the difference between an editor syncing by timecode in seconds versus lining up waveforms by hand.

Dual SD card slots allow simultaneous backup recording, which is genuine insurance on a one-time event, an interview with a hard-to-book subject, or a run-and-gun day where a reshoot is not an option. The F4 powers from AA batteries, Sony L-series packs, or DC, and its rugged chassis is built for bag and cart work.

Practical use cases include narrative dialog recording with boom and lavs, documentary and interview sound, corporate and event multitrack, panel discussions, and second-recorder redundancy on larger productions. Pairs naturally with our Schoeps and Sennheiser shotgun mics, Lectrosonics and Sennheiser wireless systems, and our boom poles. For 32-bit float recording that removes gain-setting entirely, see our Zoom F6. Available now for rental at F22 Studios in Burbank, serving productions across greater Los Angeles.
