Two XLR/TRS combo inputs with switchable phantom power handle a boom microphone and a lavalier, or a pair of wired mics for a two-person interview. The built-in XY stereo microphone pair covers everything else — room tone, wild sound, ambience beds, and quick reference recordings — without carrying an additional mic. In four-track mode the H4n captures the XLR inputs and the built-in stereo pair at the same time, so you can grab dialog and ambience in a single pass.

The controls are deliberately simple: input gain, record level, and a clear display, with no menu-diving required to get rolling. That makes the H4n a natural loaner for a director or producer who needs to grab audio without an operator, and a sensible backup recorder to leave running on a second table or in a corner of a room.

It records to SD card, runs on two AA batteries, and functions as a USB audio interface for podcasting or direct-to-computer recording. Its rubberized housing survives location work and tucks easily into a camera bag.
