Rent the Zoom SSH-6 stereo shotgun capsule in Los Angeles from F22 Studios. The SSH-6 mounts on a Zoom H5, H6, or compatible recorder and turns it into a directional stereo rig, designed for ambience and sound-effects gathering, documentary environmental sound, event and performance recording, and any shoot that needs both focus and stereo image from one microphone.

The capsule combines a shotgun mid element with a bidirectional side element in a mid-side configuration. The mid channel gives directional focus on what the microphone is aimed at; the side channel captures the width around it. Because the two are recorded separately, stereo width becomes an adjustable parameter — either on the recorder before you roll or in post afterward — rather than a decision locked in on location.

That flexibility is exactly what ambience work wants. A city street, a restaurant interior, a forest, or a concert can be recorded once and then narrowed for a tight, focused bed or opened up for an immersive wide one, all from the same take. Mid-side also folds down to mono cleanly, which matters for broadcast delivery.

The included deadcat windshield makes exterior recording practical. Wind noise is the single fastest way to ruin an outdoor ambience take, and the furry cover keeps low-frequency rumble out of the recording where a foam windscreen alone would not be enough.
