About the Zoom H5:

Rent the Zoom H5 in Los Angeles from F22 Studios. The H5 is a four-track handheld recorder designed for two-person interviews, documentary sound, ambience and effects recording, run-and-gun ENG audio, and productions that want the H6 capsule system in a smaller, lighter body.

The H5 gives you two XLR/TRS combo inputs with individual gain controls and switchable 48V phantom power, plus the removable top capsule — four tracks total. For the most common documentary setup, a boom into one input and a lav into the other, that is exactly enough, recorded as separate tracks so the editor can balance them later.

It uses the same interchangeable capsule system as the H6, shipping with the XY stereo capsule and accepting Zoom mid-side, shotgun, and stereo shotgun capsules. The XY capsule sits in a suspension mount that meaningfully reduces handling noise, which matters when the recorder is handheld for walk-and-talk interviews or roving ambience gathering.

Like the H6, the H5 records a backup safety track at a lower level so an unexpected peak does not cost you the take, runs on two AA batteries, records to SD card, and works as a USB audio interface for direct-to-laptop recording. Its smaller footprint makes it easier to hand to a subject or mount on a camera rig.
