The MD 46 is engineered around the realities of reporting. Its cardioid pattern is tuned to favor the person speaking directly into it while rejecting the crowd, traffic, and PA noise arriving from the sides and rear — the difference between a usable quote on a busy sidewalk and an unintelligible one. The frequency response is shaped for speech intelligibility rather than flat neutrality, so voices cut through a noisy mix without heavy EQ in post.
Handling noise is the other half of the design. A reporter grips a microphone, passes it between speakers, and drags a cable across a crowd, and every one of those movements can end up in the recording. The MD 46 uses internal shock mounting to keep that mechanical noise out of the capsule, which is why it stays in ENG kits long after flashier microphones have been retired.
