The ME-80 is a long shotgun capsule designed for situations where the microphone cannot get close — wide shots, exterior interviews, sports and event sidelines, wildlife and nature recording, and any setup where the boom has to stay well outside a wide frame.
Where a short shotgun like the ME66 is optimized for a boom operator working just above frame, the ME-80 trades some off-axis smoothness for reach. Its longer interference tube narrows the pickup angle further, so a subject twelve or fifteen feet away still sits forward of the background. That makes it useful on the kinds of shots that make a short shotgun sound distant and roomy.
Like the rest of the modular Sennheiser system, the capsule threads onto a powering module that runs from an internal AA battery or 48V phantom power, so it drops into any recorder, mixer, or camera workflow. The same module can carry a different capsule when the next setup calls for a wider pattern.
The trade-off worth knowing: longer shotguns are less forgiving of aiming errors, so the ME-80 rewards a boom operator who keeps it pointed accurately, and it is happiest outdoors or in larger spaces rather than in small reflective rooms.
Practical use cases include exterior interviews at a distance, event and sideline coverage, wide-shot dialog where the boom must stay far out of frame, nature and ambience recording, and any run-and-gun situation where getting closer is not an option.
