Rent the Rode NTG-2 in Los Angeles from F22 Studios. The NTG-2 is a lightweight supercardioid condenser shotgun designed for documentary and ENG work, corporate video, interviews, student and indie narrative production, and any shoot that needs dependable dialog capture on a sensible budget.
Its most practical feature is dual powering. The NTG-2 runs on a single AA battery or on standard 48V phantom power, which means it works equally well plugged into a Zoom recorder in a bag, into a mixer on a cart, or into a camera that supplies no phantom power at all. On location that flexibility removes an entire category of problem — you are never stuck because the only available input cannot feed the mic.
The supercardioid pattern gives good directionality and off-axis rejection for dialog work, and the onboard high-pass filter cuts low-frequency rumble from wind, HVAC, and traffic before it reaches your recorder. Frequency response covers 20 Hz to 20 kHz. At about 161 grams the mic is easy on boom operators over a long day and light enough to mount directly on camera without unbalancing a compact rig.
