About the Schoeps CMIT 5U:

Rent the Schoeps CMIT 5U in Los Angeles from F22 Studios. The CMIT 5U is widely considered the finest shotgun microphone available for professional production, designed for narrative feature dialog, prestige documentary and interview work, high-end commercial dialog recording, and any project where dialog fidelity, off-axis grace, and RF immunity matter more than saving money on the mic budget.

Handmade in Germany by Schoeps, the CMIT 5U has become the reference standard for high-end film and television production — the microphone you reach for when nothing less than the best will do. Its distinctive bright-blue anodized aluminum body has become an on-set icon, but its real value shows up in the tracks: cleaner dialog, smoother off-axis fall-off, and dramatically less RF interference than any competing shotgun.

Acoustically, the CMIT 5U delivers a flat 40Hz to 20kHz frequency response with a supercardioid/lobe-shaped directional pattern. What separates it from every other shotgun on the market is how gracefully its off-axis response behaves. Lesser shotguns produce harsh coloration and comb-filtering when subjects speak off-axis or when the mic is moved during a take — the CMIT 5U rolls off-axis sound with remarkable smoothness. Its directionality increases progressively with higher frequencies, producing a very balanced sonic character where off-axis dialog and room tone remain natural rather than colored. That’s exactly what a mixer wants when subjects turn away from the mic or when the boom is repositioned mid-scene.

Physical specs: less than 10 inches long, just 89 grams (about 3.14 oz) — one of the lightest broadcast shotguns available, which makes long boom-op days significantly less fatiguing. Three selectable filters on the microphone body let the mixer address common boom-recording issues at the source: low-cut for handling noise and boom-body rumble, a proximity-effect filter for close work, and a high-frequency emphasis for extended reach or brightness compensation. Sensitivity is 17 mV/Pa with a 14 dBA equivalent noise floor and 132 dB SPL handling.

RF immunity is critical on modern sets — wireless mics, wireless follow focus, wireless video, cellular in every crew member’s pocket, LED lights emitting broadband noise. The CMIT 5U’s special construction and filtering makes it exceptionally resistant to interference from all these sources, which translates directly to clean tracks in RF-hostile locations like downtown urban shoots, stadiums, and studio lots with heavy wireless traffic. Pairs with our Lectrosonics LR/LT wireless systems, any professional boom pole, and any location mixer. Available now for rental at F22 Studios in Burbank, serving productions across greater Los Angeles.
