Shooting with the Sony FX5
The FX5 slots into the Cinema Line between the FX3 and the FX6, and on paper that sounds like a small gap to fill. In practice it is the body a lot of crews have been waiting for: full-frame internal 16-bit X-OCN and 5K Open Gate capture in something light enough to live on a gimbal all day. Open Gate matters more than it sounds — shooting the full sensor area means one take can be delivered to a cinema aspect ratio and a vertical social cut without reframing compromises, which is increasingly what commercial clients actually ask for. Three base ISOs mean it stays clean from bright exteriors through available-light night work.
This is a brand-new body in our inventory, so if you are planning around it for a specific job, talk to us early about availability. Media is worth planning too — 16-bit X-OCN is generous to your colourist and hard on your cards.
Sony FX5 Rental FAQs
How does the FX5 compare to the FX6?
The FX6 is the more established documentary body with a shoulder-friendly build. The FX5 is smaller and lighter, and its internal 16-bit X-OCN and Open Gate capture give post considerably more to work with. If you are gimbal-heavy or delivering to several aspect ratios, the FX5 is the better fit.
What is Open Gate actually useful for?
It records the full sensor area rather than a cropped widescreen slice, so one take can be framed for cinema delivery and re-cropped to vertical without losing resolution. On commercial jobs that need both, it saves shooting twice.
Does it cut with our other Sony bodies?
Yes — it shares Sony Cinema Line colour science with the FX3, FX6 and FX9, so it slots in as an A or B camera alongside them without a fight in the grade.
