Built around Sony’s TRIMASTER EL OLED panel technology, the PVM-A170 delivers what LCDs simply cannot: true blacks in dark image areas, achieved by switching each pixel completely off rather than backlighting through a shutter. That means the deep shadows in a night scene are actually black on screen, not a hazy dark gray. Combined with the widest viewing angles of any professional flat-panel monitor on the market, it’s the go-to on-set reference when a group of people needs to see exactly what the camera is capturing without perceptual distortion from viewing angle or ambient light.
The 16.5″ diagonal OLED panel runs at native 1920×1080 with full 10-bit color depth. Input options cover professional production needs: two 3G/HD/SD-SDI inputs with loop-through outputs for daisy-chaining downstream monitors and recorders, one HDMI (HDCP) input for cameras and playback devices without SDI, and a composite input for legacy sources. Multiple computer signals are accepted via HDMI/DVI at resolutions from 640×480 up to 1680×1050 for laptop and reference-image display.
Camera-linkage functions display real-time metadata from compatible Sony cameras — lens data, aperture, focus distance, and shooting parameters — so DITs and DPs can verify camera state without pulling out a phone. The Picture-and-Picture function displays two sources side-by-side or picture-in-picture, essential when comparing takes, checking dailies against a reference, or setting up multi-cam matching. Waveform, vectorscope, and false color are on board for exposure and color monitoring at the video village.
The monitor weighs 4.2 kg and is approximately 40% thinner than the previous PVM-1741 generation, so it packs cleanly into cases and rigs easily onto stands and mag arms.
