At approximately 1.5 pounds, it fits where a bigger cinema camera physically cannot — car mounts, tight interiors, handheld verite, and rig-heavy gimbal setups. Despite the size, the C50 delivers a full-frame 7K sensor with internal Cinema RAW Light recording at up to 7K 60p. Canon’s Dual Base ISO of 800 and 6400 in Canon Log 2 extracts the sensor’s full 15+ stops of dynamic range in full-frame mode, giving colorists real latitude for grading demanding scenes. That means one small body can handle bright daylight exteriors, available-light night interiors, and challenging high-contrast situations without losing detail in either the shadows or the highlights. The C50 is also the first camera in Canon’s Cinema EOS line to shoot 3:2 Open Gate, recording the full area of the sensor instead of a pre-cropped widescreen slice. In practice that means you shoot once and reframe in post: the same take can be finished as a horizontal 16:9 or scope frame and re-cut as a 9:16 vertical for social, without going back for a second setup. Open Gate pairs naturally with anamorphic glass too, with in-camera de-squeeze at 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.8x and 2x, and when shooting 4K the C50 can simultaneously record a 2K 9:16, 9:17 or 1:1 crop so the social cut exists before you leave set. The 32MP stills capability makes the C50 a genuine hybrid tool — you can grab a poster frame or a BTS still without switching bodies. Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus is on board with the same reliable subject tracking that made the C70 and C500 Mark II favorites for documentary and interview work, so single-operator setups stay in focus without a dedicated 1st AC. Active cooling means you can run long takes without thermal cutoffs, and dual media slots plus a full-size HDMI port keep the professional essentials intact. Canon made deliberate trade-offs to hit the compact form factor: no built-in ND filters, no IBIS, no built-in EVF. In exchange, you get a camera that fits into rigs where anything larger becomes a liability — and the price point to match.
